Homeschooling with Littles Series #4 My Favorite Math Games

Math games make teaching math easy and fun! You can use games along side with your favorite curriculum or online program. Or, you can teach solely through games. We have games that we use on our kids’ tablets, such as Dragon Math Games – Box Big Numbers, Dragon Box Numbers, Dragon Box Algebra (my 5, 7 and 9 year olds all play this one!) and Busy Beehive (Leapfrog). My sister swears by Math Seeds! Personally, while those have all been super helpful, I tend to lean into board games or I take the theme of the games they like on their tablets and make a physical game out of it.

Math Games – We love board games!

We love math games! We love board games! When you put them together, we are one happy family! Dino Math Tracks, Sums in Space, and Money Bags are our top three favorite math games! We also enjoy the Good and The Beautiful Math Curriculum, as it uses manipulatives, and game-based learning throughout grades Pre-school through 5.

Dino Math Tracks is super fun! This was our first math board game! I think it truly was our gateway to play-based learning. It’s a race to the finish with cute little dino and mammoth pieces and a beautiful board. It offers several levels of play which I love. I just love options! Options help me to cater it to where my kids are. I can play it one way with my 9 year old and at another level for my 5 year old. When they play it together they can play to the 5 year old or meet in the middle! It helps teach word problems, place values and skip counting.

Sums in space is pretty fantastic. You can play it cooperatively or competitively. We love having this option! It’s brightly colored, helps teach addition, subtraction, and even and odd numbers. My kids love that you can get caught in a black hole the best. They also love the special spaces and short cuts.

Money Bags is our favorite game for teaching money math! It’s bright and colorful, uses play money, which my kids love and I love for teaching! The person with the most money at the end of the game wins. It teaches basic coin values, making change, and swapping out for the same value. It’s fun and fast moving with lots of learning happening along the way. We had tried to teach money math by playing store, and using Khan Academy. Those were helpful but there’s just something about this board game that made it all click for them!

Math Game recs from my sister!

My sister is another homeschool mama who loves play-based learning! Here are some of her and her kiddo’s favorite Math games!
