Outside the Box Creation – We loved it!

Outside the Box Creation is an art box subscription that gives you everything you need for fun and engaging art lessons! We just tried this company for the first time and loved it! They offer boxes for different sized families and a few different subscription options as well. We homeschool all year long. In the summer we lean into more art, more music, more fun! This box was so fun, super simple to use, and we can’t wait to do another one!

We are so glad we tried Outside the Box Creation!

From the minute the box entered the house my youngest was super excited! She didn’t even know what was in it, HA! She just knew it was, “something artsy!” I have a range of kids in this house with different tolerance levels for arts and crafts. My youngest dives in, my middle kiddo is sometimes into it, sometimes not, and my oldest is typically not a fan. The lessons in the box we used were fun for all of them! It was fantastic to watch them all dive in and engage with their own sense of curiosity and creativity!

This box was about Wassily Kandinsky and Abstract Art. Now, if I am going to spend money on a pre-created program, unit or kit of any kind, I want it to be clear, simple and fun. This was all of those things. Everything we needed came in the box, all of the supplies, very clear lesson plans, and a story to go with it all! There was even a link to a video. This way if you don’t feel confident leading the lessons yourself, you can let an artist do it for you! I did bring together some complimentary materials. We watched Mati and Dada’s episode on Kandinsky. Used two other books about feelings, they are listed below, and followed a rabbit trail about punting boats. I broke the lessons up throughout the week and each day the kids were super excited for it!

Using oil pastels was so much fun!

We got to explore using and smudging oil pastels. The lessons guided us through some simple techniques and activities to connect with styles used by Kandinsky and the idea of creating a visual representation of emotions. Each child created something very different and they loved when I gave them the chance to tell us all about their art. This was fantastic for encouraging creative expression and building confidence.

This box gave us the perfect opportunity to lean into emotional regulation and awareness. Not only did we get an art lesson, we got a lesson in emotional expression. The whole experience was enjoyable and beautiful!

Other resources that went well with this box

I pulled together some additional resources to incorporate emotional intelligence, history, a bit more about the artist and geography.

  1. Art with Mati and Dada – if you haven’t checked out this cute little cartoon, it’s a must for creating or using alongside a pre-created art lesson. The video on Kandinsky went perfectly with this Outside the Box Creation lesson.
  2. Visiting Feelings – a sweet book about feelings and how to approach them. This one has been a huge help to my little ones! We use it in our units whenever we can!
  3. Inside my heart and in my head…Feelings – This is another book that we paired with this lesson. It went very well with the concepts in the lesson connected to creating a visual representation of feelings.
