Cartooning with Outside the Box Creation was so much fun! My kiddos range in age from 5-9 and they all enjoyed it! They each put their own spin on it, which was so fun to see! The box came with clear instructions, and lessons that included the origins of cartooning, vocabulary and several different ways to experience the concepts related to cartooning. Cartooning with Kiddos of Different Ages
With this box I adjusted things slightly to leave room for creativity for each kiddo at the level that they are at. Fine motor skills develop at different rates for each kid. Any time I use a kit of any kind I have a plan for adjusting to meet each child’s needs. However, with Outside the Box Creation, I don’t have to do too much of this. This box gave me an opportunity to see my children embrace their own creativity, follow the directions but in the own individual way and approach the activities with confidence in their artistic abilities.
In our house art is about process, not perfection! This mindset has sunk in for my kids and they know that there is no right or wrong with art. You create art. You like it, or you don’t. Then you create more art. That’s our philosophy! Outside the Box Creation leaves plenty of room for them to work from these concepts and hold onto the goodness of their creation and to enjoy the creative process no matter how the finished product turns out.
Maturity and The Cartooning Box
So, we did most of this box. We did skip the comic book section. I plan to circle back to it when my youngest is a bit bigger. We are somewhat picky about what the kids watch and read. I wouldn’t call us super restrictive but we try to judge the emotional maturity levels of our kiddos as best as we can to determine what they are ready to be exposed to. After skimming the comic book that came with this box we decided to hold off for now. I look forward to doing this part of the box with them all when they are bigger though.
What We Loved and What We Added
We loved the materials, the art history lesson and the step by step process that allowed the kids to create a concept and build off of it as we went through the lessons. We added a note booking page to go with the bookmarks that we created. The page created a space for a short writing activity. The kids wrote about their drawing to help tell the story that the picture they created was supposed to show. This was great because it allowed them to express their creative ideas in writing as well as drawing. My 5 year old came up with 4 adjectives to describe her drawing and then we walked through spelling and writing them together. The others came up with a sentence or two about their picture. It was simple and worked very well! Thanks goes to my Mother-in-law for this add-on!
