SQUILT makes teaching music easy! Art and music often go by the way side for homeschoolers. We get bogged down in math, reading and other stuff and forget or feel like we just can’t teach music. Bringing the arts and appreciation for them into your homeschool is so important! Music helps kids learn emotional regulation, emotional intelligence, to listen and be aware of patterns, effective communication, and the power of team work and collaboration.
We tried SQUILT Live this summer. With SQUILT Live, Miss Mary Does it for you. She runs live classes at least twice a month, gives you everything you need already put together and organized for your kiddos to get the most out of the class and offers an interactive feature during classes through the chat. For none-class days she provides an easy to use listening calendar to keep music moving through your home that goes with the theme of the month. She has a gentle voice and demeanor that my kids enjoy, brings in humor, models self-compassion and ties in culture, geography and history as she goes!
Our Experience with SQUILT
My kids enjoyed her stuffed polar bear Chilly, who she brings out at the beginning of class to tell jokes and lighten the mood before diving into the music lesson. They also enjoyed her incorporation of stories. We love a good read-aloud. I firmly believe it’s the most important part of our school day. So, this felt familiar, comforting and enjoyable to my kiddos. They love to make things and make noise! So, when she incorporated instruments and encouraged the use of home-made instruments, this lit them up. They also loved seeing videos sent in by other families making music!
As a parent I enjoyed the ability to mostly sit back, enjoy the lesson, sing and play along and watch my kids soak it all in. It was open, print and go! Easy to use! Super simple and packed with so much wonderful information. I too enjoyed the interactive features, the variations in musical styles, and the incorporation of videos and stories. Chilly the giant stuffed polar bear was pretty cute too.
SQUILT’s Great Customer Service!
SQUILT also has great customer service. They offer a few different subscription levels. Any questions that I had along the way were answered very quickly. The website is beautiful and easy to navigate. Miss Mary has truly thought of everything! She has you covered and has made teaching music appreciation in your homeschool super easy!
DIY Curriculum
Again, Miss Mary is so intentional and organized that it’s all just ready for you. She gives you a monthly listening calendar, links to videos that she plans to use in the live lessons and all of the activities and information that you need. You can use these along with her during a live lesson OR just do it yourself. During our first month of SQUILT I didn’t read the information provided well and just dove right in. That lead to me doing everything for the first live lesson on our own. Not knowing this, we hopped online for the live lesson and realized we had already done most of what she was doing with the kids. Did my kids care? Nope, they felt in the know. They sang along, grabbed house hold items that we had already turned into drums the week before and had a blast. The point is, if you don’t want to do the live lessons or you miss a lesson, it’s totally doable as a DIY. You will have the tools and confidence to guide your kiddos through a beautifully crafted and fun music appreciation lesson. As a SQUILT live member you also get access to the video library. So, you never really miss anything!
